Intermodal infrastructure

Large-format intermodal slabs

A modern solution for the construction and upgrading of pavements in areas with very high operational intensity. It enables rapid execution of works while maintaining the operational continuity of terminals, ports, and logistics centres.

About the product

Large-format intermodal slabs

Prefabricated large-format intermodal slabs are designed for the construction of pavements in intermodal terminals, seaports, logistics centres, and high-intensity cargo handling yards. The system is adapted for both road and rail traffic, enabling its use in areas where road and railway infrastructure interact.

The solution is an example of advanced precast technology applied in demanding operational environments, where high concentrated loads and dynamic impacts occur. The slab design is based on an analysis of loads generated by gantry cranes, reachstackers, heavy goods vehicles, and rail rolling stock operating within the terminal.

The system developed by KZN Contrack responds to increasing market demands in terms of load-bearing capacity, durability, fast project delivery, and optimisation of maintenance costs throughout the entire infrastructure lifecycle.

Plusy Advantages of the product

Large-format intermodal slabs are distinguished by:

  • precast concrete elements designed for heavy road and rail loads
  • high initial quality achieved through production under controlled precast plant conditions
  • large-format design reducing the number of expansion joints
  • a properly designed drainage system enabling efficient removal of water and operational contaminants
  • significantly reduced installation time, down to as little as 72 hours, regardless of weather conditions
  • in case of wear or damage to steel components, they can be quickly replaced by cutting out and bonding in new elements without affecting the concrete pavement structure

Modernization

Modernization with CONTRACK technology

Prefabricated large-format intermodal slabs CONTRACK enable pavement modernisation in terminals and logistics centres while maintaining the operational continuity of the facility.

Thanks to prefabrication, it is possible to:

  • better plan work schedules in a high-intensity operational environment;
  • carry out works in stages, without the need to shut down entire areas from operation;
  • quickly replace or repair elements without interfering with the entire pavement structure.

This is of key importance in intermodal infrastructure, where even short-term disruptions affect the flow of logistics operations and the efficiency of the entire system.

Location

Location

Prefabricated large-format intermodal slabs CONTRACK are used in areas exposed to high concentrated loads and dynamic impacts:

  • intermodal terminals
  • seaports and inland ports
  • logistics and distribution centres
  • storage and cargo handling yards
  • gantry crane and reachstacker operating zones
  • rail sidings and container terminals
  • road–rail interface areas
  • manoeuvring areas for heavy goods vehicles

This solution is particularly effective in high-traffic, high-load environments where traditional pavements do not provide the required durability and quickly lose their operational performance.
