Prefabricated bus bays

Prefabricated bus bays are a concrete pavement system designed for the construction and modernization of public transport stops. The solution addresses the most common operational issues associated with bays built using bituminous technology—namely rutting, fatigue cracking, and surface degradation.

About production

Large-format slabs for bus bays

The CONTRACK prefabricated bus bay is a ready-made structural system, manufactured under controlled production conditions and delivered to the construction site for rapid installation.

Instead of building the pavement layer by layer on-site, the bay elements are produced in advance as prefabricated components with defined technical parameters.

This approach reduces the risk of construction errors and ensures consistent quality—particularly important in areas subject to intensive use by heavy vehicles.

Design

Dedicated design

A key component of the system is the prefabricated structural curb, which serves as a transition element between the bituminous road pavement and the concrete surface of the bus bay. The carefully designed geometry of this element ensures proper load transfer in the interface zone of the two different pavement types and reduces the risk of damage and deformation at their connection. This solution enhances the durability of the structure and ensures proper interaction between both pavement technologies.

The prefabricated elements are individually designed, taking into account traffic category, anticipated axle loads, and ground and water conditions. The structure can be adapted to various bay widths, platform lengths, and road geometries, including curved alignments. A key advantage of the system is prefabrication, which enables a significant reduction in construction time within the roadway and minimizes disruption for users.

Advantages of the product

Large-format bus pavement slabs are:

  • Concrete prefabricated elements designed for heavy bus loads
  • Use of a prefabricated structural curb that stabilizes the interface between the bituminous road pavement and the concrete slab surface
  • Possibility of quick construction in up to 72 hours thanks to limited wet work and a high degree of preparation of elements in the prefabrication plant
  • High resistance to rutting and surface deformation
  • Consistent quality and precision ensured by production under controlled conditions
  • Reduced scope of on-site construction works
  • Lower maintenance costs throughout the entire pavement life cycle
  • Reduced risk of rapid pavement deterioration

Modernization

Modernization

CONTRACK prefabricated bus bays are particularly effective in urban infrastructure upgrades, where minimizing disruption to road traffic is essential.

Thanks to prefabrication, it is possible to:

  • efficiently reconstruct or replace existing bus bays

  • reduce the time of lane occupation

  • better plan works within a functioning urban environment

This solution enables infrastructure modernization without long-term shutdowns or exclusions from use.

Durability and quality

Durability and initial quality

Bus bays are particularly exposed to heavy loads resulting from frequent stopping and starting of vehicles.

Prefabrication and the use of proven material solutions (including technologies supported by SIKA) ensure:

  • high resistance to dynamic and point loads

  • long-term structural durability

  • pavement stability without the formation of deformations

This results in reduced maintenance requirements and improved user comfort.

Location

Location

CONTRACK prefabricated bus bays are used wherever road infrastructure is subjected to intensive loads:

  • bus stops in cities and metropolitan areas

  • bays along major transport corridors

  • interchange hubs and transport centres

  • areas with high volumes of public transport traffic

  • sections of road infrastructure undergoing modernization

This solution is particularly effective in locations where standard pavements quickly deteriorate.
